Our wonderful Joseph Gale PTO brought us mini pumpkins to decorate! But first... we used our loupes to take a closer look and sketch them.
This week we finished our first math unit on place value, and addition and subtraction to the millions place. Students also completed opinion writing about the one of the four seasons, and we continued to work on our book towers in reading. On Friday, we enjoyed a trip to the garden to look at some fall sunflowers, the subject of our art lesson. I was impressed with our students focus and creativity while drawing and painting. I was also very proud of how students came together to share materials and encourage one another during this lesson. Teams were challenged to stack red plastic cups into a pyramid formation... without touching the cups! A rubber band with four pieces of yarn attached was the tool provided for the job. There were many failed attempts but within about 30 minutes, every team was successful. When reflecting on what helped them to succeed, our teams came up with these important skills: communicate your ideas, listen to others, be patient, try new ideas, learn from your mistakes, and don't give up! Our students have been practicing how to work together as a community of learners. In our classroom, students are divided into seven groups of four or five. For each of these groups, their first task was to come up with a team name, color, and motto that relates to learning together. Then, they put it all together into a poster that hangs above their group. Check out their work! |
